One of the things I enjoy most about card sketches is their flexibility. They offer structure without requiring a specific theme, stamp set, or style.
This week’s Sketch Saturday project started with a very simple design. The sketch featured layered rectangles, with a circle as the focal point.

At first glance, that sounds straightforward.
As I began working with my supplies, the circle quickly transformed into an owl. The owl needed somewhere to sit, so I added a tree stump. The stump looked a little bare, so a squirrel joined the scene. Before long, colorful autumn leaves completed this woodland setting.

What began as a simple sketch evolved into a detailed fall-themed card.
That’s the beauty of sketches.
Many crafters worry about following a sketch perfectly, but I encourage you to think of sketches as creative road maps rather than strict instructions. The basic design remains the same, even when the finished project looks completely different from the original drawing.
What I Learned From This Sketch
- Start with the sketch structure.
- Let your supplies guide the design.
- Don’t be afraid to expand on an idea.
- Simple sketches can support detailed projects.
- There is no “wrong” interpretation of a sketch.
When I compare the finished card to the sketch, I can still see the original design elements. The layered background remains. The focal element occupies the same visual space as the circle. The additional details simply help tell a story.
And honestly, those unexpected creative turns are often my favorite part of the process.
Creative Challenge
If you decide to try this sketch, ask yourself:
“What else could that circle become?”
Maybe it’s a flower, pumpkin, snowman, wreath, sentiment, shaker element, or woodland creature.
The possibilities are endless.
Thank you for stopping by for Sketch Saturday. I hope this project reminds you that sketches are meant to inspire creativity, not limit it.
Happy crafting!
