One of my favorite ways to jumpstart creativity is with a sketch. Most Saturdays I share card sketches and show how they can inspire handmade cards, but since we’re in the middle of my Christmas Mini Series, I decided to take a different approach.
This week, I used a scrapbook sketch as inspiration for a festive Christmas layout.
The original sketch caught my attention because of the layered banner elements and the central focal area for a photograph. Rather than copying the sketch exactly, I used it as a starting point and adapted it to fit my own style and supplies.
For my single page layout, I began with a 12″ x 12″ Basic White cardstock base and built layers using pieces from A Stitched Season DSP along with other Christmas-themed patterned papers from my stash. The banner shapes from the sketch translated beautifully into layered paper strips, creating movement and helping draw attention to the photo area.
To add interest and balance, I created decorative clusters using dies from my stash. Holly leaves, festive sentiments, and a cheerful Santa embellishment helped bring the Christmas theme to life while still maintaining the overall design inspired by the sketch.
What I love most about working with sketches is that they remove the pressure of starting with a blank page. A sketch provides structure, but it still leaves plenty of room to personalize the project with your favorite colors, papers, and embellishments.
And that’s really the point of Sketch Saturday.
You don’t need the exact papers, dies, or embellishments that I used. Any Christmas-themed papers you already have in your stash can work beautifully. The goal isn’t to recreate my layout piece for piece. Instead, it’s to use the sketch as a creative roadmap and make it your own.
So pull out your favorite holiday papers, choose a sketch that inspires you, and see where your creativity takes you.
